Kashmir has a great tradition of arts and handicrafts. Kashmiri handicrafts are known throughout the world for their artistic work and grandeur. There are nearly 2.50 lacs artisans directly dependent upon handicrafts in the State Jammu and Kashmir. A Kashmir rug is a hand-knotted oriental rug from Kashmir. Kashmir rugs or carpets have intricate designs that are primarily oriental, floral style in a range of colors, sizes and quality. Kashmir carpets are handmade, hand-knotted, and are primarily made in pure wool, pure silk and occasionally wool and silk blends. They are available in wide-ranging colors, designs and sizes. Akin to the famed Persian (Iranian origin) carpets, the Kashmir carpets and rugs are considered to be investments for life. Kashmiris are well adept at knitting and making Pashmina shawls, silk carpets, rugs, kurtas, and pottery.
